Newcastle

Located in Northeast Nebraska in Dixon County,  Newcastle was incorporated in 1893, and named after a house built by Gustavus Smith.  The Smith family came to the northeast Nebraska area from Chicago in 1856.  Their original residence was a large log house that Smith built.  After purchasing a large tract of Dixon County land from the Hoese brothers, Smith then built an even larger house.  The area residents referred to this larger home as the "New Castle".   

The population for this rural community is 299.  Economic activities for Newcastle include farming and livestock. Newcastle is also home to several small businesses.
